No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate

Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act

Under federal law, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for mental health services if you are not using insurance or are not billing your insurance.

A Good Faith Estimate shows the costs of services that are reasonably expected for your mental health care. This estimate is provided before services are rendered and reflects anticipated fees based on the information available at the time.

What This Means for You

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of non-emergency mental health services.

You may request a Good Faith Estimate at any time, including before scheduling services.

If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute the bill through a federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Important Notes

The Good Faith Estimate is not a contract and does not require you to proceed with services.

Actual charges may vary depending on the number of sessions, duration of treatment, or changes to your treatment plan.

Late-cancellation and no-show fees are not considered surprise medical bills under the No Surprises Act. These fees may not appear on a Good Faith Estimate if no services were rendered, but they remain enforceable.

For questions about your rights or the dispute process, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
